Lovely Penguins

It is rather surprising to find Penguins here in the hot deserts of South Africa. They live in the southern shores of Cape Town and swim in the Atlantic and Antartic Oceans.

The Jackass Penguin (Spheniscus demersus) are so called because they make horrible noises. They are not as big as the Emperor Penguins of the Antartica, but still much bigger than the Australian ones.

Lovely Penguins (continued)

At the Penguin Beach, we had close encounters with them , separated from dozens of Jackass Penguins only by a rope on the sand, and a noticeboard saying that we shouldn't cross the rope or frigthen the penguins. At times, an illiterate penguin ignore the noticeboard and intrude our side of the beach. It would soon be surrounded by people on all sides.

Lovely Penguins (continued)

Another interesting thing about them is that they lay eggs on the hill side, not far from the beach. Their nests are less than a meter from the foot path, and there we can have a really close look at them. However, this one is getting hostile because we are pretty close to her eggs in the hole they dug.

Ostrich Farm

In Cape Town we visited an Ostrich farm with lots of ostriches and related products. We can play with them and feed them or get bitten by them.

Owl Park

We visited what we called the Owl Park. It hosts dozens of different species of owls. But it also has interesting animals like monkeys who loves to play with the bandage on Irene's finger, a friendly peahen , and an angry swan determined to thrust its beak into any visitor near its waters.

Lion Park

We are the few who dared to visit the lion's den and wrestled with them. And I successful kidnapped their big baby !
